Abstract

1337326 Vinyl chloride BP CHEMICALS INTERNATIONAL Ltd 25 April 1972 [27 May 1971] 17504/71 Heading C2C Vinyl chloride is prepared by pyrolysing 1,2-dichloroethane at an elevated temperature in the presence of nitric oxide. The pyrolysis is suitably carried out at a temperature of from 250‹ to 600‹ C. at superatmospheric pressure with the nitric oxide being present in an amount of from 10 to 500 ppm. after introduction into the pyrolysis system from an external source. The purpose of the introduction of nitric oxide is to retard the formation of carbonaceous byproducts.
