Abstract

1337083 Keyboards with coded outputs INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 19 May 1971 [13 July 1970] 15728/71 Heading G4H [Also in Division H1] A keyboard switch assembly (see Division H1) includes a conductive diaphragm engageable, on depression of a selected key, with the contacts of a selected group. A 16-key keyboard with hexidecimal output values zero through F is described, with binary values appearing at the output terminals 61-78 and each group of four contacts representing 1, 2, 4 and 8 bits in the binary code. A protection circuit detects simultaneous depression of two keys, and a strobe circuit detects contact between the diaphragm and all the contacts of the corresponding group upon depression of a key, Fig. 2C (not shown). Fig. 3 shows the switchboard array for a tem key keyboard utilizing a three out of fourteen code and the associated logic for strobe and protection, Fig. 4A shows the arrangement for generating an EBCDIC code wherein each switch contact of each key determines two bits in the output code. The 16 bit code at output terminals 1A0-1D3 is decoded to give an 8 bit output code at terminals 310-380. Strobe and protection are provided also via signals on lines 210 and 390. The restore signal is on line 300.
