Abstract
1336915 Fibrous structures OJI YUKA GOSEISHI KENKYUJO KK 8 Sept 1971 [8 Sept 1970] 41842/71 Heading B5B A process for producing fine fibrous structures comprises ejecting an aqueous emulsive liquid comprising 5 to 40 wt. per cent. of a linear polymer, 10 to 80 wt. per cent of a solvent for the polymer, the weight ratio of solvent to polymer being greater than unity, 10 to 80 wt. per cent water and 0 to 80% based on the weight of polymer of a water-sorption agent from a high pressure region at a temperature below the critical temperature of the liquid and above the temperature at which the solvent swells the polymer and a pressure higher than the saturated vapour pressure of the liquid into a lowpressure region maintained at a temperature and pressure which enable the liquid phase to evaporate. The conditions in the high pressure region are such that the polymer (and optional water-sorption agent) is in the form of fluid droplets in the liquid, the polymer droplets also containing a liquid phase which has infiltrated therein. Preferably the polymer is a homo- or copolymer of an olefin, the solvent therefor is an aromatic, aliphatic or alicyclic hydrocarbon and the water-sorption agent is water-soluble alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or ammonium salt of an inorganic or organic acid or hydroxide or is a fine water-insoluble silicate (e.g. clay, diatomaceous earth, &c.). In examples polyethylene, polypropropylene, ethylene-propylene copolymer, a blend of polyethylene and polypropylene, a blend of polyethylene and polystyrene, and polyvinylchloride are used as the polymer materials, fine fibres being produced from aqueous emulsions thereof by ejection from an autoclave through circular and slit shaped orifices.
