Abstract

1336895 9#,10α-Steroids F HOFFMANNLA ROCHE & CO AG 21 May 1971 [21 May 1970 (2)] 16378/71 Headings C2U and C2C The invention comprises compounds of formula (wherein R is C 2-8 alkyl), and their preparation from compounds of formula (wherein R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are each H or Me, at least one being Me) by the successive steps of: (i) protecting the two oxo groups (e.g. by ketalization, heteroketalization, or reduction to hydroxyl groups which are then esterified or etherified); (ii) hydrogenation to give a compound of formula (iii) treatment with a strong base to give a compound of formula (iv) regeneration of the free oxo groups; and (v) cyclization of the resulting trione. Steps (iv) and (v) may be effected in a single step when employing a mineral acid. Compounds of Formula II and antecedents thereof are as described in Specifications 1,336,896 and 1,298,212. Pharmaceutical compositions for oral, parenteral, rectal and topical administration comprise a carrier and a compound of Formula I. The type of activity of the latter is not specified.
