Abstract

1336397 Pipe bends; metal pipes; insulating pipes SHAW & McINNES Ltd 26 June 1972 [25 June 1971] 29799/71 Headings F2G and F2P A structural element, e.g. a pipe bend, pipe or oil burner volute, comprises a layer of metal, a layer of wear-resistant material having a Brinell hardness of at least 550, and an intermediate layer of a thermally-insulating grouting material. The element is produced by a method consisting of locating the metal and wear-resistant material in spaced-apart relationship, and introducing the grouting material into the cavity so formed to fill it. As shown, a pipe bend consists of an outer shell 10 of rolled mild steel plates welded together at 11, an inner shell 14 of a wear resistant iron alloy having a Brinell hardness of at least 550, and a cavity between filled with thermally-insulating cement grouting. The iron alloy consists of 3-3À4% carbon; 0À6% silicon: 4À5% nickel: 1À5% chromium, the balance being iron. The grouting consists of 1 part by weight of sulphate resisting cement: 2 parts sand: 0À5 parts pulverized fuel ash: 0À02 parts bentonite: and 0À0023 parts fluidizer and emulsifier sold under the Registered Trade Mark "Colplus W.E." To make the bend, the inner and outer layers are assembled, spaced apart by jack screws 12, and the grouting is fed into the cavity 19 between through sockets 20. Subsequently the jack screws and sockets are removed. The bend is provided at its ends with flanges 15 by which it can be butt-jointed and bolted, Fig. 2 (not shown), to another pipe &c. In another form, an oil burner volute, Figs. 3, 4 (not shown), is made from an inner layer of cast tiles (23) fabricated from the alloy described above and provided with integral legs (24) which space them from an outer caging (22) to which they are secured by bolts (26).
