Abstract

1336347 Eddy current damping KERNVERFAHRENSTECHNIK mbH GES FUR 22 Oct 1971 [6 Nov 1970] 49180/71 Heading F2S [Also in Division B2] In a centrifuge having a rotor 1 which revolves about a vertical axis, a device for stabilizing the rotor comprises a magnetic bearing consisting of an axially-polarized, ring-shaped magnet 6 and a ring or flange 3 made at least partly of ferromagnetic material, the ring or flange 3 being attached to the rotor 1 and the magnet 6 to the centrifuge housing, or vice versa, so as to leave a clearance 4 between the ring or flange and the magnet, and the ring or flange carrying at least one induction ring 9. As shown, the flange 3 is integral with a cover 2 of the rotor 1 and the induction ring 9, which may be of copper, aluminium or an alloy thereof, is embedded in a groove provided in the flange. The ring-shaped magnet 6 is a permanent magnet carried by a hub 5 which is vertically adjustable on a threaded spindle 7 connected to the centrifuge housing. The magnet 6 has an annular groove 11 on its underside facing the ring 9. If during operation the rotor is deflected radially as a consequence of vibrations, the interaction between the flange 3 and the magnet 6 generates restoring forces which return the rotor to its original position. At the same time, eddy currents are generated in the induction ring 9 which absorb at least part of the vibration energy. A number of spaced concentric induction rings may be embedded in the ring or flange 3.
