Abstract
1336107 Cleaning glass phials G LO MASCOLO 10 Jan 1972 [12 Jan 1971] 1005/72 Heading F2N [Also in Division B8] Glass phials are internally cleaned when moved step-wise through a cleansing system in which they are vibrated (by electro mechanical means 21, 22) and where hollow needles 8, having air jets issuing from apertures in their side walls, are inserted into them; the needles being carried on a slide member 7 which reciprocates along guide rods 5. When the slide member 7 moves towards the stationary phials to insert the needles, a roller 11 mounted on lever 12 contacts cam 13, carried on one of the guide rods 5 and operates a plunger 14 of valve 15 which is then opened to allow compressed air to pass to the bores of needles 8 via duct 9. After a short dwell period within the phials, the slide 7 is retracted, causing the needles 8 to exit from the phials' interior and lever 12 to cut off the air supply by closing valve 15. The needle array is such that the first needle encountered by each phial only has an aperture at its free-end, whilst all successive needles have apertures in the peripheral walls, which are inclined away from the free ends of the needles (Fig. 3, not shown). The support elements 1, 2 opposite the needles 8 have cradles (17, Fig. 2, not shown) linked via rigid rods 22. to the breaker arm of electromagnets 20 which produce the rapid oscillations in the phials. Above cradles 17 are retaining elements (18, not shown) which hold the phials when they are being cleaned and which retract to allow the phials to be moved. Intermittent movement of the phials, stepwise across the supports 1, 2 is effected by two parallel bars 4 arranged below the phials and linked to a known drive system such that the bars move upward to lift the phials off the supports 1, 2, then move horizontally and then downwardly to relocate the phials on to the next adjacent support elements. The bars 4 then return to their initial position, pause for a certain period and then repeat the movement cycle.
