Abstract

Class 117 [Also in Groups V, VI, XVII, XXX and XL (b)] In a packeting-machine (see Group XVII) a block of cheese slabs 261 is advanced step-bystep by an endless conveyer 260 operated by a pawl and ratchet gear controlled 'by a photoelectric device 293 (see Groups XXX and XL (b)), to position the end slab 296, Fig. 21, beneath a separator comprising a resilientlymounted chamber 318 to which air under pressure is admitted through a valve-controlled pipe 319. The chamber has a series of orifices arranged to deliver inclined jets, which engage the slab 296 and partially separate it from the remainder of the block, and vertical jets which are directed along the plane of separation of the slab and complete the stripping operation. To prevent premature movement of the next slab 330, it is engaged by pointed projections 331 on the chamber. The separated slab is engaged by a transfer head 335 which is resiliently mounted on an operating arm 337 and formed with a series of cups 353 communicating with a chamber 354 to which pressure air or vacuum is supplied through a valve-controlled pipe 355. The arm 377 is pivoted to a horizontal slide 340 reciprocably mounted on a carriage 338 which in turn is movable vertically against the action of springs 348 on posts 345. The arm also carries a roller 342 running in an angular guide 343 on the carriage. The carriage, slide and valve are operated in synchronism by cam mechanism whereby suction is applied to the cups, the slide moves to the left causing the transfer head to move to the position of Fig. 14. the carriage is allowed to drop under the action of the springs 348 and air pressure is applied to the cups to deposit the slab On an intermittently-operated discharge conveyer comprising endless belts 395, 396. The transfer head then returns to its original position and the operations are repeated until a stack of eight slabs has been built up on the conveyer, the resilient mounting of the head allowing it to yield as the height of the stack increases.
