Abstract
1336062 Safety devices B W HAMMETT 3 March 1972 [10 Feb 1971] 4399/71 Heading B7H A device for indicating the safe stopping distance to a vehicle driver includes a vertically movable horizontal bar mounted in uprights and adapted to be positioned in the drivers line of sight and means for moving the bar in response to the vehicle speed. At a particular speed an obstacle above the bar, which is observed to intersect the road at the safe stopping distance, is safely distanced from the vehicle whereas an obstacle below the bar is not. The bar may be constituted by a thin rod of clear plastics and may be edge illuminated at night. The device may be driven by a mechanism incorporating a controlled slip arrangement, as used in some conventional speedometers, or by a centrifugal device. Other driving means may be speed responsive fluid drag devices, hydraulic pressure generating means, or electronic pulse generating devices.
