1441606 Vehicle instruments BAYERISCHE MOTOREN WERKE AG 23 Aug 1973 [23 Aug 1972] 40103/73 Heading B7H [Also in Division Gl] A vehicle speedometer has, in addition to the speed scale 4, a distance scale 6 against which the braking distance corresponding to the actual vehicle speed is indicated by a variable length field 7, and the actual distance ahead of a preceding vehicle or an obstacle is indicated by a pointer 10 movable in front of the field 7. The braking distance is indicated by a coloured band visible through a window 3, the boundary 9 of a strongly coloured band marking the braking distance alone, and the boundary 8 of a lighter coloured zone marking the braking distance plus the reaction distance. If the pointer 10 moves to the left of the line 8, at 10<SP>1</SP>, the spacing from the vehicle ahead is inadequate. The pointer 10 is controlled by a range-finder such as a radar, echo-sounding, or photo-electric system.
