Abstract

1,238,244. Indicating vehicle stopping distances. K.B. WAKELAM. July 15, 1969 [March 31, 1969], No.16795/69. Heading G2J. A safety device for a motor vehicle has a partly transparent scale 2, Fig.6, mounted adhesively on or adjacent to the windscreen having horizontal graduations indicating road speeds and an uppermost eyeline for reference. Using mirror 18 the device may be correctly positioned by the driver such that when travelling on a horizontal road a line from the users eye passing through one of the graduations strikes the road at a distance substantially equal to the safer stopping distance of the speed indicated. In another embodiment the transparent scale is replaced by a vertically graduated speedometer which is connected to horizontal pointer through a pendulum connection compensating for inclination of the road such that a continuous indication of the safe stopping distance is provided.
