Abstract

1335892 Thermal cracking SELAS OF AMERICA (NEDERLAND) NV 9 July 1971 [10 July 1970] 32309/71 Heading C5E Unsaturated hydrocarbons, particularly ethylene and acetylene, are produced by passing a pre-heated mixture of steam and hydrocarbon feedstock, (e.g. ethane) in a weight ratio of 2- 3 : 1, at 1000-1100‹ C. through a tubular reactor of internal diameter not more than 5 cm. for a residence time of not more than 0À1 sec. Preferably the hydrocarbon feed and part of the steam are pre-heated to 600-750‹ C., the rest of the steam pre-heated to 900-1000‹ C. and the two streams are then mixed. The reaction tube is preferably made of chromium-nickel steel.
