Abstract
1335538 Drill I BERSCHEID 30 Nov 1970 56786/70 Heading B3C [Also in Division B4] In a drill bit for a rotary-percussive drill comprising a connection portion 10 having a head 11 and a set of tapered cutter inserts 13 mounted on the end of the head, the region of the head between the inserts and the body of the portion 10 has a portion having an effective diameter substantially equal to but not less than the cutting diameter of the inserts at their cutting ends, but greater than the diameter of the inserts at their opposite ends so as to prevent rifling when the bit is in use. As described the whole of the head 11 may have a diameter the same as the cutting diameter, as shown in Fig. 6. The inserts 13 may be of tungsten carbide brazed to cruciform wings on the head. The head may have a wear resistant metal welded to its periphery. Sludge grooves 25 are provided in the head either obliquely, as shown, or in pairs defining inverted V's.
