Abstract

1335417 Casting processes COMPOSITE SCIENCES Inc 19 April 1971 [2 April 1970] 25889/71 Heading B3F [Also in Division C7] An article having a metallic layer 2 thereon is formed by applying to an electrically conductive substrate 1 a self-supporting layer of a particulate metal or alloy and a binder, pressing on electrode 5 into contact with the layer and passing an electric current between the electrode 5 and substrate 1 to melt the metal particles and decompose the binder. The metallic layer formed may adhere to the substrate, if the latter is formed of steel, Ni, Co, Cu or alloys thereof, through a metallurgical bond, or it may be removed from the substrate if the latter is formed of tungsten or graphite or is coated with an electrically conductive parting agent e.g. an aqueous suspension of magnesium hydroxide. The metallic layer formed may be of iron-, cobalt-, nickel-, copper- or silver-based alloys and may also contain Si, Cr, P and B. Particles of an abrasive e.g. a carbide of W, Ta, Cr, Ti, Si or B, a metal boride, a metal silicide, a nitride or diamond, may also be included in the metallic layer. The binder is preferably polytetrafluoroethylene, a polymethacrylate, a polyacrylate or a polyvinyl alcohol and the self-supporting layer may be cemented to the substrate by an adhesive prior to the decomposition of the binder.
