Abstract

1335233 Cutting apparatus FIRESTONE TIRE & RUBBER CO 19 Jan 1971 [11 Feb 1971] 44985/71 Divided out of 1335231 Heading B4B A cutting assembly for tyre ply material having reinforcing cords comprises a cutter 725 mounted on a pin 751, the cutter consisting of a blade 781, rotatably suspended from a housing 770, movable by an air ram 775, which is displaceable downwardly by an air ram into engagement with the edge of the stationary ply material on support 726 between fingers 790 and 791 which clamp the material in position. A curved cutting edge 782 of the blade first cuts the material edge and then the blade is rotated until a blunted tearing edge enters the cut and the cutter is moved across the material so that it is torn between two adjacent cords. As it is torn the ply material is lifted along the pathway the blade will follow and the blade is heated to cause the ply material to flow and seal the cut and torn edges. Air blown through jets lifts the material during tearing.
