Abstract

1335065 Coating with silicon oxide OPTICAL COATING LABORATORY INC 25 May 1971 [22 June 1970] 16950/71 Heading C7F A plastics article is coated with a substantially transparent, abrasion-resistant, stress-free layer of silicon oxide having an optical thickness greater than 3 quarter waves and a refractive index of 1À50 to 1À75. The article may be a transparent optical component of polymethylmethacrylate, polycarbonate, allyl resin, butyrate resin, polystyrene or polysulphone and is preferably pre-cleaned and dried, e.g. using alcohol. Coating is by evaporation of SiO in a vacuum chamber which has been pumped down to <1 x 10<SP>-5</SP> Torr and backfilled with O 2 , e.g. to 1 to 8 x 10<SP>-5</SP> torr; progressive variation of O 2 pressure causes the refractive index to vary progressively between 1À5 and 1À75, but layers of constant RI may be deposited; typical thicknesses range up to 15 quarter waves at design wavelength 550 nanometers. Further layers may be deposited on the Si oxide, e.g. (1) an adhesion layer of metal or metal oxide (Cr, Ni or Fe 2 O 3 ) followed by a reflection reducing layer such as MgF 2 or (2) an anti-reflection stack of, in sequence TiO 2 , MgF 2 , TiO 2 and MgF 2 .
