1334737 Centrifugal drying apparatus W CANNING & CO Ltd 5 March 1971 6221/71 Heading F4G Water, lacquer, paint, or cutting oil is removed from workpieces (or swarf) in an openended perforated centrifuge drum 18 provided with a distributer disc 16, by loading workpieces through the open end 21 of the drum 18 on to the distributer disc 16 while the drum 18 (and disc 16) are rotated at a speed (80 rpm) sufficient to move the workpieces to, and retain them against the drum, rotating the drum 18 at a higher speed (500 rpm) to dry the workpieces, and then halting the drum or rotating it at a lower speed to allow the workpieces to fall through the lower open end of the drum. The disc 16 is keyed to a shaft 12 and supported by a collar thereon, and is secured to the drum 18 by bolts passing through hollow spokes 17. The shaft 12 is journalled in a bearings 10 and 11 and driven by a variable-speed electric motor 14 by way of a gear-box 15 and pulleys-and-belts 13. The upper bearing 10 acts as a thrust bearing and allows swinging movement of the shaft 12, while the lower bearing includes a damper for such movement. Air is blown through a heater 26 into a casing 24 and passes through perforations into the drum 18. A loading shoot 28 may be provided with a vibrator 29. The casing 24 is double-walled for safety reasons.
