1334219 Hypodermic syringes W A SHIELDS 27 Sept 1972 44615/72 Heading A5R A hypodermic syringe comprises a barrel 7 having a filling opening 13 in a beaded mouth 15 defining a lip 16, a diaphragm closing the filling opening 13 and comprising an annular flange engaging the lip 16 and connected by a wall to a dome-shaped portion 18, a needle adapter 22 having a depending skirt 23 crimped to the beaded mouth 15 and a crown having an annular shoulder 25 abutting the flange 17 against the lip 16, said domeshaped portion 18 of the diaphragm extending into the crown. The annular connecting wall of the diaphragm extends outside the plane of the lip 16 and comprises a section 21 parallel to the plane of the lip 16 and a section 20 perpendicular to it to form an annular groove with the flange 17 in the inner face of the diaphragm and an annular groove with the dome-shaped portion 18 in the outer face of the diaphragm. In use, pressure in the barrel 7 causes the diaphragm to balloon into the crown of the needle adaptor 22 where the needle 27 pierces the diaphragm.
