Abstract

1333867 Continuous rod cut-off MOLINS Ltd 1 May 1972 [30 April 1971] 12307/71 Heading A2C In an apparatus for making cigarettes in which a continuous filler is wrapped to form a continuous cigarette rod, an inert gas is introduced into the filler so that the inert gas is present in the rod where the cigarettes are cut off, and the cigarettes are cut off by means of a laser beam. A stationary laser beam producing-device is provided, the beam being deflected by means of a mirror system so as to reciprocate it both in line with and across the rod to effect the cutting action. The inert gas, which may be nitrogen, argon or helium, is introduced into the filler upstream of the wrapper folder, e.g. via a pipe passing through a filler compression tongue, or at a filler compression shoe, or immediately downstream of the point where suction is cut off from a suction conveyer feeding the filler to the rod former.
