Abstract

1333794 Measuring the speed of bubbles EUROPEAN ATOMIC ENERGY COMMUNITY 26 May 1971 [29 May 1970] 17312/71 Heading G1A In an apparatus for determining the speed of bubbles entrained by a fluid flowing along a tube 1, two separate beams 12 and 13 formed from a laser 9 by a polarizing plate 10 and a prism 11 are passed through the tube 1 at two fixed positions and are received by two separate photo-transistors 7 and 6 as shown. The photo-transistors outputs are fed to a "multi-channel time analyser" to cross-correlate the trains of pulses formed by the bubbles and provide an average time for the bubbles to pass from one radiation path to another. Thus as the distance between the paths are unknown the average velocity can be calculated. In further embodiment the outputs from the photocells are fed to pulse shapers and differentiators and only the positive pulses corresponding to the leading edges of the pulses are fed to the multichannel analyzer. The apparatus can be used to determine the mean size of the bubbles by providing the multichannel time analyzer with pulses of opposite polarity in particular those derived from the same photo-cell output pulse train.
