Abstract
1333591 Optical systems BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORP Ltd 19 Jan 1971 [19 Jan 1970] 2422/70 Heading G2J A vibration-stabilized optical sight comprises a sighting telescope 31 rigidly mounted on a rigid mounting member 30 on which a reflector 33 is pivotally mounted in a position to reflect the line of sight of the telescope, the pivotal axis 34 of the mirror being at right angles to the line of sight, and a mass 35 also pivotally mounted on member 30, the pivotal axis 36 of the mass being spaced from and parallel to the axis 34, the mass and the reflector being inter-connected by a transmission 37 of moment of inertia low compared total angular inertia of the mass and the reflector and in which the velocity ratio is so chosen in relation to the ratio of the angular momentum of the reflector to that of the mass that movement of the telescope results in compensating pivotal motion of the mass and reflector to keep the line of sight still. As shown, a second reflector 38 is mounted on a rotatable shaft 39 also carrying mass 42 to provide stabilization in a second direction. Alternatively, Fig. 1 (not shown) the mass 35 and transmission may be mounted on shaft 39, and reflector 33 fixed, reflector 38 pivoting in two planes to give both stabilizations. The rotatable mirrors and weights may be provided with restoring springs and damping means to restore the pivoted reflector to a centralized position non- resonantly. The reflectors may be mirrors, as shown, or prisms.
