Abstract
1, 015, 916. Stabilizing line of sight. FERRANTI Ltd. Oct. 10, 1963 [Oct. 12, 1962], No. 38646/62. Heading G2J. An optical instrument for stabilizing in a picture frame area of the instrument an image of an external object against small rotational movements of the instrument, includes a gyro mounted mirror. Thus where the camera is mounted in a guided missile for transmitting a television picture to an aircraft, the received picture will not 'dance' about the screen as a result of roll or pitch of the missile. The invention is also suitable for use with hand held movie and television cameras used e.g. for sporting events. The instrument comprises a window 24, a pair of constant deviation mirrors 25, a composite lens 17, a two gimbal gyro 12 carrying a plane, concave or convex mirror 15, a picture frame area 20 and a t.v. camera 21. Preferably, the length of the optical path 22 is half the focal length of lens system 17. Various modifications are described, including replacing the mirrors 25 with a prism, employing constant deviation mirror systems in each optical path, aligning the spin axis with the line of sight and mounting the stabilized mirror at an angle thereto, and by utilising semi reflecting mirrors. The camera may be mounted outside casing 10, and connected to the light system by a bundle of optical fibres. Where the invention is applied to trolley mounted t.v. cameras, the gyro is partially restrained by passing currents through range and deflection coils; thus any sustained angular movement of the casing causes a restoring couple to be applied to the gyro, thereby causing it to follow any sustained movement smoothly.
