Abstract

1333503 Olefin copolymer rubber compositions E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 19 April 1971 [8 April 1970 15 May 1970] 26488/71 Heading C3P Liquid adhesive compositions comprise (A) water, (B), in solution in (A), a phenolic resin component selected from (B1) a mixture of a phenol and a water soluble aldehyde in proportions to form a heat-hardenable phenolaldehyde resin and (B2) a heat-hardenable phenol-aldehyde resin made from a mixture as defined in (B1), (C), dispersed in (A) as particles of a latex, an elastomer selected from elastomeric copolymers of ethylene and a dione, elastomeric terpolymers of ethylene, propylene and a dione and blends of any of these, and (D) dispersed in (A), a reinforcing carbon black in an amount such that the weight ratio D: C is in the range 23 : 77 to 38 : 62. The weight ratio of C : B is preferably 50 : 50 to 91 : 9. Component B is preferably a mixture of resorcinol and formaldehyde or the resin formed therefrom. Component C is preferably an ethylene/1,4-hexadione copolymer or a terpolymer of ethylene, propylene and 1,4-hexadiene or 5-ethylidene-2- norbornene. The compositions are prepared by dry milling elastomer (C) with the reinforcing carbon, mixing the obtained blend with an organic solvent for the elastomer until the elastomer is in solution and a liquid composition is formed, forming an emulsion by mixing the liquid composition with water containing an emulsifying agent, removing the solvent from the emulsion and mixing the resulting latex with component (B). The dry blending of the carbon black may be replaced by a liquid blending by mixing an aqueous dispersion of the carbon black with a latex of the polymer. Adjuvants include curing, colouring and antifreeze agents and stabilizers. Alkaline pH values are obtained by adding metal hydroxides. The compositions are used as an adhesive for tyre cords and fabrics made of nylon, rayon, polyesters, glass and steel.
