Abstract

1333172 Making composite pipes; jointing by tube expanding R A LEGATE and K STRICKLAND 20 March 1972 [20 July 1971] 33897/71 Heading B3J and B3A A metal pipe is lined by positioning a metal liner in the pipe in a gaseous atmosphere, filling the liner with a liquid and firing at least three explosive charges along the axis of the pipe so that the liner tightly engages the pipe in the central region of the pipe. Further explosiveexpansion operations extend the engagement over the length of the liner. The pipe may be of drawn or welded mild steel, stainless steel or brass and the liner of copper, copper alloy, titanium, tantalum, aluminium or alloy steel. For short lengths of pipe 1, Fig. 1, the pipe is supported on blocks 2 and water, filling the sleeve 4, is contained in a polyethylene bag 5. The detonators 8 for the top and centre charges 7 point downwards and that for the bottom charge upwards. The top and bottom charges may be of equal value which is larger or smaller than that of the centre charge, and external constraint may be applied by a divided clamp. A cane, chain or rope 6 carries the charges. Tabular statements (not shown) list the number of expansion operations and give the ratio and value of the charges used. Longer pipes, Fig. 5 are supported on a sloping trestle 20 and instead of using a plastics bag, the ends of the sleeve are plugged. A bleed valve is provided in a hole 17 in one of the plugs 10, 13 and at least one of them receives a hose 19 for topping up after plugging. After the first four firings, the next and subsequent firings of groups of three charges take place with the charges located progressively closer first to one end of the pipe and then to the other.
