Abstract
1333096 Occluding and restricting blood vessels J A HUNTER and R W SESSIONS 23 Nov 1970 [21 Nov 1969] 55587/70 Heading A5R A device for insertion into a blood vessel to effect restriction or occlusion thereof comprises an elongate, hollow, fluid-tight, smoothwalled, expandible body 1, Fig. 2, having a tubular wall 5 which is more deformable than end portions 4, one of which is constructed for detachable mounting on an insertion device with the aid of which the body 1, in use, is placed at a desired location and is expanded to form an axially-extending circumferential band engaging the blood vessel and distributing the resulting outwardly diverted forces on the vessel over an area to protect the blood vessel from concentrated puncturing or rupturing forces, the body 1 being-constructed to maintain its state of expansion at said location on release from the insertion device. The body 1 may be expanded by means of a spring 6, or by introducing fluid thereinto via a threaded port 7, Fig. 4 having a flap valve 8, or via a smooth-bore port with a ball valve, or via a self-sealing end portion. For effecting restriction rather than occlusion a blood by-pass passage extends sealingly through the body, Figs. 9, 10 (not shown). The body 1 is introduced by retaining it adjacent to the end of a conduit 11, Fig. 1, connected via an adapter 35 to a syringe 31 having a piston 32 therein. Prior to insertion into a blood vessel, the body 1 of Fig. 2 is contracted by relative movement between a wire 42, extending through conduit 11 and connected to piston 32 and engaging the inner wall of one end part 4, and the conduit 11 which engages the outer wall of the other end part 4. The fluid-expanded bodies 1 may be expanded by fluid moved by piston 32, the wire 42 being omitted. The inner end of conduit 11 may have a fitting allowing reconnection to the body 1 for subsequent contraction and removal. The conduit 11 may extend through a tube 36 having a Y-fitting 39 through which fluid may be introduced into tube 36 to allow determination of the location of the body 1 in the blood vessel by for example, X-rays. Alternatively, fluid introduced into the body 1 may be a contrast medium. The fluid may alternatively be a liquid which solidifies after introduction into the body 1.
