Abstract
1332917 Magnetic switches H O BOEHME CORP 27 Nov 1970 56528/70 Heading H1N A magnetic switch operable by a data card having magnetized areas has polarizing means effective to magnetize one contact of a pair of co-operating magnetizable contacts whose other contact is influenced by a magnetized area of the card when the card is located in a supporting means m the switch. The card 10 may comprise a barium ferrite layer 11 between plastics layers 12, 13 and the ferrite may be magnetized locally to form areas 11<SP>1</SP> with magnetic axes normal to the card. Each contact set may be a sealed magnetic reed contact unit 22 mounted at an angle of about 30 degrees to the slot (19) in which the data card 10 may be inserted. The contact units are connected between printed circuit boards 27, 28 on opposite sides of an insulating block 21 below which a transversely polarized sheet 37 is mounted to magnetize the reeds 23 of the contact units 22. An insulating block 35 contains magnetic screws 36 which can be adjusted to set the magnetic influence on individual contact units. Fig. 8 shows a combined switch in which the data card 51 can only be inserted as far as a projection 69 on a member 63 which can only be moved by the card if a magnetic pattern 52 on the card is such as to repel plungers 68 out of holes 66 in a copper plate 58. The required pattern 52 is set by a further card 78 secured above the member 63 and having magnets 79 to attract those plungers which will not be repelled by the magnets in pattern 52. As the member 63 is moved inward by the card 51, after the plungers 68 have disengaged, a pin 71 thereon operates a microswitch to energize polarizing magnets 91 below contact units 22 which are operated by magnetized areas 53 as described above.
