Abstract
1332883 Injection moulding IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 20 Jan 1972 [28 Jan 1971] 2813/72 Heading B5A An injection moulding machine comprises first and second injection units for first and second materials 11 and 21, each unit comprising an injection ram 15, 25 in an injection barrel 10, 20 and a feed channel 13, 23, the feed channels being connectable to each other and to a common sprue channel 3, control means to control the position of the ram in the second injection unit in dependence directly or indirectly on the amount of first material injected, and limiting means to limit the flow of the second material up the feed channel 13 of the first material during injection of the second material. The control means may be responsive to (i) the position of the first ram 15, or (ii) the time elapsed since commencement of injection of the first material, or (iii) the pressure exerted on the first material by the ram 15. The machine may be used for injection moulding articles having a sandwich structure in which a skin of one material 11 is first injected and then a core material 21, which may be foamable, is injected so as to be enclosed by the skin material. The invention reduces contamination of the skin material by the core material. A pump 4 supplies hydraulic fluid through valves 110, 210 to cylinders 17, 27 containing pistons 16, 26 connected to rams 15, 25 respectively. An accumulator 114 is connected to the cylinder 17 for the skin material injection unit. Pump 4 normally operates continuously, a relief valve 6 returning fluid to a reservoir 5 when the pressure exceeds a certain limit. When injection of skin material is commenced, the sprue end of the core material feed channel 23 is filled with skin material 121 (Fig. 1). This may be brought about by injecting a further quantity of skin material after injecting the core material. Thus during injection of core material a collar 119 on skin injection ram 15 engages a limit stop 120 which can subsequently be retracted to allow a further injection of skin material. Alternatively the further injection of skin material may be effected by rotation of the screw 12. Injection of core material may be commenced before injection of skin material is completed and the time of 'overlap' may be varied at will from nil to nearly the total skin material injection time.
