Abstract

1332495 Vinyl carboxamide sulphate polymers OCCIDENTAL PETROLEUM CORP 17 Nov 1970 [17 Nov 1969] 54713/70 Heading C3P [Also in Division C1] Vinyl carboxamide sulphate polymers are prepared by (a) hydrolysing an α,#-ethylenically unsaturated nitrile monomer in an aqueous acidic medium containing at least 1 mole of water and at least 0À85 mole of sulphuric acid per mole of nitrile monomer, and (b) polymerizing the product in the presence of a catalyst. Examples of nitrile monomers are acrylonitrile and methacrylonitrile. Comonomers may be present in the polymerization, e.g. unreacted nitrile, vinyl esters, vinyl or vinylidene chloride, vinyl sulphonic acid, vinyl ethers, unsaturated carboxylic acids and anhydrides, unsaturated aldehydes and ketones, (meth)acrylamide, diacetone acrylamide, styrene and derivatives, dienes, allylidene diacetate, ethylidene norbornene and alkyl(meth)acrylates. Catalysts include peroxy compounds, azobisisobutyronitrile, Redox systems, ultra-violet light and gamma radiation. A chain transfer agent, e.g. an alkanol or mercapto compound, may optionally be present. Copper or a copper compound (e.g. copper sulphate) may be present in the hydrolysis step as a polymerization inhibitor.
