Abstract

1332442 Filamentary packages; covers OWENS-CORNING FIBERGLAS CORP 27 Jan 1972 [8 Feb 1971] 3945/72 Headings B8C and B8M A wound tubular package of continuous glass filamentary adapted for withdrawal of the material from the interior thereof, comprises glass filamentary material wound in successive layers, and an outer covering of synthetic resinous material snrunk into intimate non- adhering contact with the outermost layer of filamentary material the resinous covering and the outermost layer of filamentary material being together sufficiently self-supporting after withdrawal of the underneath inner layers to permit complete withdrawal of the filamentary material without interruption. The covering preferably is in the form of a sleeve or bag placed over the package of filamentary material and heat shrunk on to the package. The sleeve or bag is dimensioned to shrink to provide an aperture 30, smaller than the internal bore of the package, to thereby provide a guide for withdrawal of the end 14 of the material from the interior of the package. The package is preferably cylindrical and the covering is provided with straight sides 22 and flat end coverings 26, 24. The covering is preferably sufficiently rigid to be self-supporting and thereby prevent collapse of the windings during withdrawal. The covering material is preferably polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutylene, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, polystyrene, polyacrylate, linear polyester or polyamide.
