Abstract

1,122,185. Shrink packaging twine. EASTMAN KODAK CO. 14 Oct., 1965 [16 Oct., 1964], No. 43599/65. Heading B8C. A roll of twine is packaged by enclosing it in a wrapper of extruded low density polyethylene having a contraction value upon heating of at least 45% in the extrustion direction and 35% in the transverse direction, and heat-shrinking the wrapper into tight contact with the roll, thereby supporting the roll against collapse and telescoping. The ends of the wrapper may be sealed down or tucked into the hollow core of the roll. Closure discs of cardboard or plastics may be inserted into one or both ends of the package, and a hole may be provided in one of said discs to facilitate withdrawal of the twine. Alternatively, a zone of material which may be easily punched out may be provided in the disc, or if no disc is included a weakened spot may be provided on the wrapper. The wrapper may be in the form of a bag which may be left open along one side to facilitate insertion of the roll of twine. Such a package may be produced by apparatus of Fig. 3, wherein the twine is wound into a roll by a winder 30. An operator places the roll into a thermoplastic bag 32 and after tucking in the ends of the wrapper, inverts the package over a prong 33 on a conveyer 34 which carries it through a heat shrinking oven 35.
