Abstract

1332434 Boring earth and rock BRITISH STEEL PILING CO Ltd 3 Nov 1970 [3 Nov 1969] 53800/69 Heading E1F Downward pressure is applied to a kelly 6 during drilling by double-acting rams 24 supplied with fluid from an accumulator and acting on an axially slidable sleeve 18 rotatable with the kelly. The rams are coupled with the sleeve by a non-rotatable collar 20. The sleeve is mounted for rotation in a carrier 16 pivoted at 10 to a vehicle 2 and movable by rams 12. A spring supported plate (30), Fig. 2 (not shown) buffers the sleeve from impacts of a flange 32 of the kelly, which is supported from a swivel 7. After the rams have completed their downward (contraction) stroke, drilling is stopped to release the kelly from frictional gripping by the sleeve, and the sleeve is raised relative to the kelly for the next downward stroke, by pumping fluid to extend the rams 24 against the accumulator pressure. The rams 24 have different pistons to enable a larger force to be exerted by the pump than by the accumulator.
