Abstract
1331995 Producing strengthened glass TRANSGLAS PATENT-UND LIZENZVERWERTUNGS AG 1 Oct 1970 [3 Oct 1969 3 Aug 1970] 46741/70 Heading C1M A method for the production of strengthened glass, in which a glass ribbon is conveyed from a glass-melting furnace and while the glass has a viscosity of between 10<SP>3</SP> and 10<SP>10</SP> poises exerting a uniform pressure upon the glass by impacting the glass with a fluent medium at a pressure in the range 0À7 to 6 atmospheres above atmospheric pressure, which medium has a temperature approximately the same as the glass. The fluent medium may be an inert gas such as helium, air, or nitrogen, or a liquid or a liquid gas mixture and may contain solid constitutents such as anhydrous metal salts or one of potassium, sulsidium and cesium. The method may be employed in conjunction with the stretching operation as described in Specification 1,331,635. When the stretching is carried out by blowing glass over a lip 3 and into a compartment 11 the fluid medium is distributed from conduits 15 located in the walls of the compartment 11. When the stretching is carried out using rollers the fluent medium is distributed from two pairs of globe members 30, 31 and 32, 33, one pair being situated in each stretching zone.
