Abstract

1354434 Chemical tempering of glass I A BOGUSLAVSKY S M BREKHOVSKIKH V A ABROSIMOV and J. N. VIKTOROVA 11 Jan 1972 1279/72 Heading C1M Glass articles at an annealing temperature are held in a molten salt having a viscosity not exceeding 100 centipoises and simultaneously subjected to mechanical vibrations at a frequency in the range 20 to 18,000 cycles per second transmitted to the molten salt, the article being subsequently cooled. The vibrations are preferably at a resonance frequency of the article. Examples of molten salts are KNO 3 ; AgNO 3 ; LiCl 69À6% + KCl 30À4%; LiCl 42% + K 2 SO 4 58%; LiSO 4 53À8% + KCl 29À7% + NaCl 16À5% and ZnCl 2 . Examples of variations of frequency and viscosity of the salts ZnCl 2 and KNO 3 on borosilicate glass and sodium potassium silicate glass are given.
