Abstract

1331604 Magnetic cards EMI Ltd 3 Nov 1970 [14 Nov 1969] 55787/69 Heading B6A [Also in Division H1] A security or credit card comprises a layer containing acicular magnetic particles, the layer comprising a permanently structured magnetic layer in which the acicular particles in selected spaced regions are orientated in a predetermined direction, while the particles in the remainder of the layer are unorientated or orientated at right-angles to the predetermined direction. The magnetic layer may be laminated between other layers, the card is made by orientating selected areas of particles in a liquid layer, and then hardening. Thus (Fig. 1) a polyester film (1) is coated at (9) with a suspension of acicular magnetic particles, e.g. γ-Fe 2 O 3 in a hardenable liquid, e.g. resinous lacquer. Uni-directional current pulses derived from winding (8) act on the still-fluid coating to set up a cyclic orientation pattern in the magnetic particles. The pattern is rendered permanent by hardening the coating, using driers (12). The film carrying the hardened magnetic coating may be bonded to a stiff support, "face-up" or "face down", and may be covered with a protective opaque or coloured layer. In operation, the difference in remanence between orientated and unorientated portions, when the card is passed over a magnet, trigger mechanisms. The remanence difference develops a field pattern which can be used to is increased by pre-orientating the whole of the acicular particles in a direction at right angles to the subsequent pattern orientation direction.
