Abstract

1304531 Credit cards DE LA RUE INSTRUMENTS Ltd 1 Jan 1971 [6 Jan 1970] 581/70 Heading B6A [Also in Division H1] A credit card (Fig. 1) comprises strips 2, 3 and 4 of magnetic tape adhered to the card surface in parallel arrangement with respect to the-longitudinal axis of the card; printed indicia 6 and a coloured marginal area 7 which serves to produce a validation signal when correctly inserted in processing apparatus. A 0À001 inch thick overlay of P.V.C. protects strips 2, 3 and 4 from abrasion and degradation. The card may be embossed in non-magnetic areas. Strips 3 and 4 are conventional magnetic coatings providing a "read and write" facility when the card is inserted in validation or processing apparatus. Strip 2 comprises encoded indicia manifested by alternate random and orientated areas of the magnetic coating extending in parallel contiguity across the width of the strip. These areas are formed by subjecting the strip, during coating with the magnetic layer, to a magnetic field in a pattern determined by electrical pulses representative of code elements (Division H1).
