Abstract

1331571 Anti jack-knifing arrangements D DODD 15 Feb 1972 [15 Feb 1971] 4679/71 Heading B7T An anti jack-knifing arrangement for use with an articulated tractor/trailer combination comprises a toothed segment 7 integral with a king pin on the trailer which meshes with a toothed rack 8 on the tractor centrally biased by springs 9 and connected with piston-rods 12, 13 of a pair of hydraulic cylinders 14, 15, the cylinders being connected to a reservoir 20 via valves 16, 17 which always allow fluid to flow into the cylinders but prevent fluid flowing out unless opened by solenoids 21, 22 controlled from the steering wheel 29. The arrangement is such that in the straight ahead position of the steering wheel circuits are completed through both solenoids via a finger 28 so that no articulation is possible but when the wheel is turned, say to the left, the circuit to solenoid 22 is broken and valve 17 allows fluid to flow back to the reservoir and hence articulation of the vehicle may take place. If a jack-knifing condition is then sensed by the driver the wheel is moved to the right to correct this and valve 17 is closed, thus preventing any further articulation. An over-ride switch may be incorporated and used during reversing and slow running. The finger 28 may alternatively be mounted on the track rod of the tractor.
