Abstract
1,222,610. Vehicle steering mechanism. HUNSLET (HOLDING) Ltd. 28 Oct., 1969 [1 Nov., 1968], No. 51939/68. Heading B7H. Vehicle steering mechanism for turning two pairs of road wheels in either circle or crabwise steering modes comprises a control member 17 turned about a pivot axis 20 by driver-operable steering means, a pair of links 15, 16 for respective connection to the pairs of wheels, one link 16 being connected to the control member 17 and the other link 15 being connected to a control element 18 slidable in a slot 19 in the control member 17, and means for moving the control element 18 between positions on opposite sides of the pivot axis 20. The control element 18 may also be positioned in alignment with the pivot axis 20 so that the wheels 11 may be fixed in the straight-ahead position by locking means and the vehicle can be steered by the wheels 12 alone. As shown the steering means for turning the control member 17 and the means for moving the control element 18 are both fluidpressure actuated piston and cylinder devices 21, 22 and 23, 24.
