Abstract
1331451 Fusion welding DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 10 June 1971 [12 June 1970] 28711/70 Heading B3R [Also in Division F2] In a method of mounting a bearing track member, e.g. inner race 31, on a hollow shaft 33, in which the track member 31 is pressed against a step 34 on the shaft by a load 42 applied to a retaining collar 39 and the collar is then electron beam welded to the shaft by a radially directed beam which passes firstly through the shaft and then through the collar so as to produce a residual shrinkage stress in the shaft to clamp the collar against the bearing track and the bearing track against the step, one pair of the abutting faces is preformed so as to interlock when the members are assembled on the shaft to prevent relative rotation occurring. As shown, Fig. 1, the abutting faces of the collar 39 and the inner race 31 are pre-machined to a small angle 53, e.g. 2 degrees, to the plane normal to the shaft axis 44. In an alternative arrangement (Fig. 2, not shown) a projecting lug on the shoulder of the shaft engages a complementary slot formed in the bearing track member.
