Abstract

1331308 Electrolysing and then filtering liquid to purify it SOC D'ETUDES ET DE DIFFUSION DE PROCEDES ET BREVETS S A 28 Oct 1970 [28 Oct 1969] 51321/70 Heading C7B [Also in Division C1] A process for purifying an aqueous liquid comprises passing the liquid between metal electrodes, continuously subjecting the metal electrodes to an electric current to uniformly scatter ions through the liquid thus causing the formation of flocculates with hydroxyl ions in the liquid, retaining the flocculates in the form of a porous mass, continuously circulating the aqueous liquid through the porous mass whereby further flocculates contained therein are deposited and retained in the porous mass, applying sufficient current to the electrodes to provide a metal ion emission at a rate such that a number of free metal ions pass through the porous mass with the aqueous liquid, and washing the porous mass of flocculates when a determined threshold of pressure drop for the aqueous liquid passing through the porous mass has been reached whereby the liquid is purified by the action of the flocculates continuously activated by the emission of metal ions, free metal ions passing through the porous mass further providing sterilization properties to the purified aqueous liquid. The flocculates retained as a porous mass will be retained in a preformed filtering mass through which the aqueous liquid is circulated. The process may be carried out in an apparatus of the type shown in Fig. 1, comprising a tank 1, prefilter 3, treatment vat 6 containing metallic e.g. copper, electrodes, and a filter chamber 9 containing layers 10a, 10b of filter material. The vat 6 is shown in detail in Fig. 2 and comprises an inlet cavity 13 and an outlet cavity 14, and between these are located metal electrodes 15 and 16 connected to D.C. or A.C. supply 19. The process is particularly applicable to the decontamination of radio-active water.
