Abstract

1331264 Polymerizing on inorganic fibres IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 5 Aug 1971 [5 Aug 1970] 37802/70 Heading C3P [Also in Divisions B2 and D1] Inorganic fibres are surface-treated with addition polymers by (a) applying to the fibre an initial coating (which may be continuous or discontinuous) of an addition polymer dispersed or dissolved in an organic liquid substantially free from moisture, said coating containing an initiator for a subsequent addition polymerization, and (b) contacting the initial polymer coating on the fibre with a monomer which is polymerizable by the said initiator, whereby the monomer is imbibed by the polymer coating and is subsequently polymerized after activation of the initiator. In step (b) a diluent is preferably present which is a solvent for the monomer but a non-solvent for the addition polymer. The inorganic fibre (which may be in the form of filament, strand, chopped strand, yam, roving, malt, fabric, ribbon &c.) is suitably derived from glass or a glass-like material, e.g. fused silica, lime-alumina-borosilicate, metal silicates, aluminium and other metal polyphosphates; and from asbestos. Step (b) may follow directly after step (a) or, alternatively, step (b) may be effected after storage or intermediate treatment (e.g. drawing or winding) of the fibre. In examples glass fibre filaments are treated with (1) and (5) polymethyl methacrylate and methyl methacrylate, (2) polymethyl methacrylate and acrylonitrile/acrylic acid, (3) polyvinyl acetate and vinyl acetate, (4) and (6) polyethyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate; azodiisobutyronitrile, 4,4<SP>1</SP>-azobis(cyanovaleric acid) and bis(4-t-butylcyclohexyl)peroxydicarbonate are used as initiators, and lauryl mercaptan is also present in some cases.
