Abstract

1331251 Electro-chemical processes C J B DEVELOPMENTS Ltd 22 Dec 1970 [2 Jan 1970] 210/70 Heading C7B In an electro-chemical process such as the production of hypochlorite from a solution of chloride or from natural sea water at least one of the electrodes comprises a mass of particles forming a semi-conductive or poorly conductive bed, the particles being compressed by application of a pressure of at least 1 lb/in<SP>2</SP> and the fluid comprising the reactants for the electrochemical reaction is caused to flow through the mass of particles. An electrically conducting member may be employed in conjunction with the mass of particles as a feeder electrode. The particles, e.g. of graphite or magnetite, may be granular or spherical and may have a size in the range 50 microns to 5000 microns. Alternatively the particles may be beads of non-conducting or poorly-conducting material such as graphite, glass or titanium coated with a film of highlyconducting material such as platinum. In a modification the electrode defined above, or the other electrode of the cell may be a mass of highlyconductive particles under an applied pressure of at least 1 lb/in<SP>2</SP> in conjunction with a poorly-conducting feeder electrode. In an example a cylindrical cathode of perforated steel sheet contains a concentric cylindrical porous diaphragm which in turn contains a mass of particles of graphite in contact with an anode conducting member and a fluid distributer inlet, the particles being compressed by a load applied to an insulating cover.
