1331229 Drying kilns G F WELLS Ltd 4 Dec 1970 [10 Dec 1969] 60332/69 Heading F4G In a drying kiln 10 comprising a motor-driven fan 30 reversible to circulate heated drying air in a forward direction or a reverse direction, motoroperated dampers 48 are provided in ports 44 and 46 and are controlled by a controller 74 so that the damper 48 in the port which is functioning as an inlet opens only to a pre-set position which is less than fully open, while the damper 48 in the port which is functioning as an outlet opens to the fully open position. This avoids pressurization of the kiln due to the incoming cold air having a greater density than the outgoing warm air. Heated air is passed between vertically-spaced courses of timber 12 from the fan 30 either firstly through the centre section to the space 28 and then back through the side sections, or vice-versa. Air heaters 26 may comprise lengths or coils of steam pipes, or may be electrical. Steam is admitted through manifold 50 to provide humidification. Fan and damper control circuit (Fig. 3).-The direction of rotation of the fan motor is determined by a timer switch 54, e.g. with contact between L and F, and no signal from controller 74, the damper motors are in closed positions. A signal from controller 74 then energizes the relays 74, 70, and motor 56 is operated to a partially open position set by resistance potentiometer 68 (and then stops) whilst motor 58 opens fully.
