Abstract

1331228 Modulating light POST OFFICE 19 April 1971 [2 Dec 1969] 58864/69 Heading H4F A Pockel cell comprises a single crystal of a polarizable dipolar organic compound having a non-centrosymmetric crystal structure and an extended # electron system, for example derivatives of benzene, pyridine, azulene, tropone, pyrazole, anthracene, and naphthalene, and including quinones, azo-compounds, carbodiimides, azines, phenylhydrazones, merocyanine dyes, syndrons and analogous heterocycles, some compounds being specifically listed in the Specification. After purification by zone refining, single crystals of the material are formed by vapour sublimation, by pulling an evacuated capsule containing the material from a thermostatically controlled bath, or by a Bridgman technique. As described, two identical rectangular cross-sectioned crystals with faces parallel to the crystal axes, are placed in tandem along an optical path between an analyzer and polarizer, their X axes coinciding with the optical path, and having electrodes on their Z faces. A #/2 plate is placed between the crystals, and identical potentials but of opposite polarity are applied across the crystals. Such an arrangement causes the static birefringence to cancel and gives twice the charge in polarization for a given potential difference. In alternative forms, (a) a single Pockels cell may be used; (b) Pockels cell may be immersed in an optically matched fluid (c) transparent electrodes may be provided for the longitudinal effect (d) one face of the crystal may be provided with a reflecting surface. A light reflector may comprises a polarizer, a Pockels cell and a birefringent crystal.
