Abstract

1331170 Card reader RAYTHEON CORP 28 July 1971 [31 Aug 1970] 35525/71 Heading G4M A data reader system has a card carrying both clock and data codes and an optical reader partially enclosing the card and allowing the card to be moved by hand at different speeds. The card 3 carries clock marks 32 and data marks 57 which are a continuation of the clock marks. The card is received in a channel formed by an arm 38 and an aligning base portion 36 in a reader formed from transparent or translucent material. The reader contains a light source 44 and is coated with a opaque material 53 except for a face 46 adjacent the card light is reflected from the card or absorbed by the marks and is detected by photo-cells 51, 52 for the clock and data respectively. Signals from the photo-cells are amplified and the data signals are fed to a latch circuit 72 and the clock signals are fed to a delay circuit producing a short pulse at the trailing edge of the pulse signal. The short pulse is used to reset the latch (Fig. 3, not shown) and feeds a switch 74 to gate the data into a shift register. Data may be read from the shift register at a different rate in series or in parallel under the control of a computer or may be recirculated in the shift register. Several card readers may feed one computer and a card may be a boarding pass for a bus.
