Abstract
1331065 Gauging; adjusting position of a cutting tool MASCHINENFABRIK HEID AG 13 Nov 1970 [28 Nov 1969] 54250/70 Headings B3B and B3T In a machine tool such as a lathe, means is provided for correcting the position of the edge of a cutting tool, the means comprising a feeler 4 constituting the sensing portion of a control unit 9 which is retractably mounted in an arm 8 secured to the lathe bed. A cross-slide 6 is mounted on a saddle 7 and carries a tool clamping member 5 for a cutting tool 1 and between the member 5 and cross-slide 6 there is located a slider unit 2 which incorporates a crossshaped member 12 interposed between upper and lower parts 42, 40 respectively which permits adjustment of the tool clamping member in two directions at right angles relative to the cross-slide on the lathe bed, the cross-member being displaceable by independently actuated screw members 10, 10<SP>1</SP>. In operation, respective tools are presented to the feeler 4 and which is displaced thereby from a predetermined zero position in either or both of the two directions. The displacement of the feeler actuates the control unit which transmits signals to a control member 33 which causes actuation of the screw members 10<SP>1</SP>, 10, which restores the cutting edge of the tool to its correct position with the feeler in its zero position. This control is independent of the numerical control of the machine tool. The feeler is provided with plain sides and is preferably of rectangular crosssection, the sides of the feeler corresponding to the planes of movement of the slider unit. One or more feelers may be provided for use with respective ones of tools mounted on the crossslide.
