Abstract
1331060 Fuel injection systems; photo electric control of fuel injection JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 13 July 1971 [16 April 1970] 18316/70 Heading G1A and G1N In an I.C. engine fuel injection control system having at least one electromagnetic injector, the duration of the injector opening pulses is determined at least partly by a discriminator circuit in which a stream of pulses proportional to engine speed are averaged, the stream of pulses being provided by a generator which is arranged to provide, in each engine cycle, a greater number of pulses than the total number of pulses fed to the injector or injectors during the corresponding engine cycle. As shown, injectors 15a-15d are opened in pairs by pulses produced in generators 16a, 16b which are triggered by a generator 17, the duration of the pulses produced by the generators 16a, 16b being determined by a computer 19 in dependence upon throttle position, air temperature, and engine coolant temperature, and the output of a discriminator circuit 23, (modified by an intake manifold pressure transducer 24), which is fed with a stream of pulses from the generator 17 greater in number than the triggering pulses produced thereby. The generator 17 producing the stream of pulses may be in the form of an electromagnet transducer consisting of a coil adjacent a toothed disc rotated by the engine, e.g. the flywheel, Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown), or by a contact switch operated by protuberances on a disc rotated by the engine, Fig.6 (not shown). In these cases, the triggering pulses may be provided by capacitative pick-ups on the ignition leads, Fig. 8 (not shown). In a further embodiment, the generator 17 is provided by light sources and light sensitive devices positioned on opposite sides of an apertured disc rotated by the engine, Figs.2-5 (not shown).
