Abstract
1330865 Testing impedance to earth RANSBURG CORP 17 Sept 1970 [17 Sept 1969] 44435/70 Heading G1U [Also in Divisions G4 and H3] In an arrangement for checking whether an object 15 which should be earthed, is earthed by a sufficiently low impedance path, (and therefore checking the propensity of the object for becoming electrostatically charged) a potential is applied to the object by a probe 14 and if sufficient current flows (indicating an adequate earth) a trigger 21, 22 fires to energize a relay 25 which holds over its contact 61 and prevents, by opening its normally closed contact 60, the energization of a lamp and bell which would otherwise normally occur following detection of the presence of the object 15 at the testing position by a micro- or photo-electricswitch 10 closing a contact 16 and thereby energizing a relay 35 which, via its contact 62, controls the lamp and bell. If the current that flows following the application of a potential to the object 15 is too low to fire the trigger 21 and 22, the normally closed contact 60 is not opened, and hence when the contact 16 closes, indicating the presence of the object 15, the lamp and bell are energized. A further relay 27 is provided which, by its contact 64 and a capacitor 29 is arranged to cause a transistor 31 to conduct momentarily following the opening of contact 16 when the object is removed from the testing position, in order to release relay 25 (which, if it has been energized, will be holding over its contact 61). The relay 35 may, if desired, be provided with a hold contact 63 and a normally closed release contact 36. The system described is for use in an electrostatically coating plant in which metal objects 15 are suspended by earthed hooks for conveyance through a coating unit, and in which, because the hooks may become dirty or covered with the coating being applied, a suspended object 15 may be inadequately earthed thereby presenting a hazard since such an object may become electrostatically charged and cause an explosion.
