Abstract

1330851 Cellular glass; removing oil from water SOC IMMOBILIARE SETTE SRL 9 Oct 1970 [16 Oet 1969 24 Sept 1970] 48102/70 Headings C1C and C1M A substance for removing by absorption of non-miscible polluting liquids from water, comprises pumice, or perlite, obsidian or vermiculite, or a slag from steel production, which has been heat treated, e.g. at 500-1200‹ C., and where appropriate milled, to yield a product having a density less than that of water and a pore space amounting to at least 50% of its volume. Preferably the substance has a pore space amounting to at least 85% of its volume and a density lower than 0À3 g./ml. and may be subsequently rendered water-repellant by treatment with, e.g. a solution of polyvinyl acetate or silicone. Oil may be removed from water by spreading the substance on the surface, whereupon after absorbing the oil the substance sinks.
