Intermediates isolated are 4 - (5,6 - diamino- 4 - pyrimidinylamino) - 2 - hydroxy - butyric acid, prepared by reacting 6-amino-5-nitro-4-chloropyrimidine with 4-amino-2-hydroxy butyric acid to give 4-(6-amino-5-nitro-4-pyrimidinylamino) - 2 - hydroxybutyric acid and reducing this; and 4-(5-formamido-6-amino-4-pyrimidinyl amino)-2-hydroxy-butyric acid, prepared by reduction of the corresponding 5-nitro compound in the presence of formic acid. Pharmaceutical compositions having hypocholesterolemic activity comprise a compound I together with a suitable excipient in forms suitable for enteral or parenteral application.
