Abstract

1329454 Machine-readable records CHARECOGN SYSTEMS Inc 5 Dec 1970 57891/70 Heading G4M A label for attachment to goods for sale carries information in the form of a circular track divided into equi-angular sectors, Fig. 1, each sector having the same number of twostate code elements arranged side by side, and one of the sectors having a unique combination of code elements representing a start code. The code elements may be printed, magnetic or fluorescent areas. Preferably the code chosen is such that each digit is represented by the same number of code elements of each type, e.g. four 0 bits and four 1 bits, and not more than two like bits occur in adjacent positions within a sector or in adjacent sectors no matter what digits the sectors represent. The preferred code is also easily converted to 1, 2, 4, 8 code. A reading device for the label comprises a handle 20, Fig. 2, containing a lamp 32 and a motor-driven lens 28 and fibre optics bundle 27 for scanning the code track and conducting light therefrom to a photo-cell 30. The output from photo-cell 30 represents the sensed information and is also used to synchronize a timing oscillator 31. The axis of the reading device need not be precisely aligned with the centre of the code track, correct read-out being possible as long as the scanning path does not leave the code track.
